Ongania, Juan Carlos

    0.28 sec.

Ongania, Juan Carlos (1914–1995)

Argentine military leader and president 1966–70. He became president following the establishment of the military junta that ousted President Illia in 1966. His authoritarian administration, marked by the abolition of democratic parties and the integration of military rule into government, initiated widespread resentment and opposition.

Ongania's failure to follow appropriate economic policy led to further economic decline, rising inflation and labour conflict. His indecisiveness over the direction of economic reform policies to improve conditions further fuelled opposition to the administration in 1969, leading to social unrest in many cities. In June 1970, Ongania was ousted from government by a military junta, and General Roberto Levingston took control.
