Onizuka, Ellison Shoji

Onizuka, Ellison Shoji (1946–1986)

US astronaut. He was a mission specialist aboard the January 1985 flight of the space shuttle Discovery, the first Department of Defense mission. On his second flight, Onizuka was killed with other crew members aboard Challenger when the craft exploded soon after its launch in January 1986. He was selected as an astronaut in 1978.
