Onslow, George

Onslow, (André) George (or Georges) (Louis) (1784–1853)

French composer of English descent. He settled at Clermont-Ferrand as a country squire, held regular chamber music practices there, studied the cello, and went for two years to Vienna to study composition.

He was the grandson of the first Lord Onslow. While living in London for some years as a young man, he studied piano with Nicolas Hüllmandel, Jan Dussek, and Johann Baptist Cramer. In the 1820s, wishing to write operas, he made further studies with Antonin Reicha in Paris, where he lived alternatively.

Opera

L'alcade de la Vega (1824), Le Colporteur (1827), and Le Duc de Guise (1837).

Orchestral and chamber

four symphonies, three string quartets, 34 string quintets, two piano sextets, piano septet, nonet for strings and wind, six piano trios; violin and piano and cello and piano sonatas; sonatas for piano duet; piano pieces.
