Opa-Locka

Town in Dade County, southeastern Florida, USA, 13 km/8 mi northwest of downtown Miami; population (1990) 15,300. It has diverse light industries, including food processing and the manufacture of cardboard boxes, boats, clothing, and furniture. The Opa-Locka Airport houses a coastguard station, and aviation-based industries and training facilities have been established. Opa-Locka's castellated city hall and other Moorish-style buildings were constructed 1926–30 under the direction of its founder, aircraft designer Glenn Curtiss, who wanted to give the town an Arabian Nights atmosphere.
