open cluster

Loose cluster of young stars. More than 1,200 open clusters have been catalogued, each containing between a dozen and several thousand stars. They are also known as galactic clusters because of their abundance along the galactic plane. Examples include the Pleiades and the Hyades. Star clusters are of interest to astronomers because they represent samples of stars that have been formed at the same time from similar material. See also globular cluster and star cluster.
