operon

Group of genes that are found next to each other on a chromosome, and are turned on and off as an integrated unit. They usually produce enzymes that control different steps in the same biochemical pathway by a single operator gene. Operons were discovered in 1961 (by the French biochemists François Jacob and Jacques Monod) in bacteria.

They are less common in higher organisms where the control of metabolism is a more complex process.
