Ophüls, Max (1902–1957)

German film director. His style is characterized by an ironic, bittersweet tone and intricate camera movement. He worked in Europe and the USA, attracting much critical praise for such films as The Bartered Bride (1932), Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948), Caught (1949), The Reckless Moment (1949), La Ronde (1950), The Earrings of Madame de .. (1953), and Lola Montès (1955).

His son is the film-maker Marcel Ophüls (1927– ).
