Opieński, Henryk (1870–1942)

Polish musicologist, composer, and conductor. He edited Chopin's letters and wrote on him, Paderewski, and Polish music in general.

He studied piano with Paderewski, composition with Vincent d'Indy at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, and conducting and musicology with Arthur Nikisch and Hugo Riemann at Leipzig. He formed a vocal society at Lausanne in 1918 and lived in Switzerland until his death, except when he was director of the Poznań Conservatory 1920–26.

Opera and stage

operas Maria (Malczewski, 1904), and Jacob the Lutenist (1918); incidental music for Calderón's El principe constante.

Choral and orchestral

oratorio The Prodigal Son; cantata Mickiewicz; symphonic poems Zymunt August i Barbara and Lilla Weneda.

Chamber

string quartet; instrumental pieces; songs.
