Opitz, Martin

Opitz, Martin (1597–1639)

German poet. His poems (Teutsche Poemata, Weltliche Poemata, Geistliche Poemata) tend to be didactic, cold, and formal. In his Buch von der deutschen Poeterey 1624 he stresses the importance of clarity and adherence to rules.

He was born in Bunzlau, Silesia. In 1625 he was crowned poet laureate in Vienna by the emperor Ferdinand II. He was given the title of von Boberfeld 1629 and became historiographer to Ladislaus IV of Poland 1638.
