AUSSAT

Organization formed in 1981 by the federal government of Australia and Telecom Australia to own and operate Australia's domestic satellite system. It has now been renamed the Optus Corporation. The first satellite, AUSSAT-1, was launched by the US space shuttle Discovery in 1985, and the third satellite was launched from French Guiana in 1987 by the European Space Agency's Ariane rocket launcher. The AUSSAT satellite system enables people in remote outback areas of Australia to receive television broadcasts.

INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD Australian telecomms provider Optus and Internet company Ninemsn have announced that they have entered into an agreement to link mobile phones and broadband services.
credit rating agency said the action reflects ''the more competitive operating environment in Singapore, slower revenue growth in all operations, and the company's subsequently weaker financial position following the full acquisition of SingTel Optus Ltd.
Under the deal, which has yet to be approved by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Foxtel would resell its subscription channels on main competitor Optus Television, which is owned by Singapore Telecommunications, thereby assuming Optus' high programming costs.
