Oral

Town and capital of Oral oblast (region), northwestern Kazakhstan, situated on the Oral (Zhayyq) River; population (2001 est) 198,500. Oral is at the centre of a predominantly agricultural region on the edge of the Central Asian steppe. It is a metalworking, meat-packing, and wool-processing centre. Sheepskin goods are also produced here.

Oral was founded in 1625 as the Cossack fortress and town of Yaikski Gorodok. It was renamed Uralsk in 1775.
