Oral

Oblast (region) in northwestern Kazakhstan; area 151,200 sq km/58,378 sq mi; population (1996) 639,000. The capital is Oral. Cattle and sheep are farmed, and wheat and other crops grown. There are food-processing, light, and machine-building industries.

The region lies in the north of the Caspian lowland. The principal river is the Ural (Zhayyq). The north of the oblast is in a region of steppe, the south is mainly semi-desert.

Oral oblast was formed in 1932, and between 1962 and 1964 formed part of West Kazakhstan oblast.
