Orangeburg

Village in Orangetown, Rockland County, southeastern New York State, USA, 5 km/3 mi southwest of Nyack; population (1990 est) 3,600. It has some light industry, and is home to the Dominican College of Blauvelt (1950).

Orangeburg

Seat of Orangeburg County, southern-central South Carolina, USA, on the North Fork tributary of the Edisto River, 61 km/38 mi southeast of Columbia; population (2000) 12,800. Formerly a cotton-trading centre, its agricultural economy has been largely overtaken by diverse light industries, producing textiles, tools, and chemicals. Educational foundations include Claflin College (1869) and South Carolina State College (1896). The town was founded in 1735 by German, Dutch, and Swiss settlers.
