Oranjestad

Capital of the Dutch island of Aruba, the westernmost of the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean Sea; population (1997) 20,000. The town is situated on the southwest coast of the island on Paarden Bay. It has a large oil refinery.

The old quarter of the town is a combination of Dutch colonial architecture and Spanish features. The town's principal landmark is the Willem II Torren, an old lighthouse, which formed part of the fortifications of Fort Zoutman.
