Erzgebirge

Mountain range on the border between Germany and the Czech Republic, where the rare metals uranium, cobalt, bismuth, arsenic, and antimony are mined. Some 145 km/90 mi long, its highest summit is Mount Klinovec (Keilberg) (1,244 m/4,080 ft), in the Czech Republic. In 1991, following the reunification of Germany, many uranium mines were closed and plans to clean up the heavily polluted region were formulated.
