Oregon City

Seat of Clackamas County, northwestern Oregon, USA, on the Willamette Falls of the Willamette River, 16 km/10 mi south of Portland; population (1990) 14,700. It is a suburb of Portland and trading centre for the region's cattle and fruit producers. Manufactures include wood pulp, paper, batteries, cutlery, and canned foods. Founded in 1828, Oregon City was the western terminus of the Oregon Trail, a major pioneer route. It became the first incorporated city west of the Mississippi River, and the capital of Oregon Territory (1849–51).
