Orekhovo-Zuyevo

City in the Moscow oblast (region) of the Russian Federation, on the Klyazma River 100 km/62 mi east of Moscow; population (1996 est) 125,000. It has a large textile industry, based mostly on cotton milling. The area had long been a centre of silk weaving; the cotton industry here dates from 1797. The city was created in 1917 by the merger of several industrial villages.

Orekhovo-Zuyevo played an important role in Russian industrial history; a weavers' strike, which broke out here in 1885, led to the enactment of the country's first pieces of modern labour legislation.
