Orense

City and capital of Orense province in Galicia, northwest Spain, on the left bank of the River Miño; population (2001) 107,500. Products include textiles, furniture, food products, and metal goods. There is a 12th–13th-century Gothic cathedral, and a seven-arched bridge, begun in the 13th century, the central arch of which is 38 m/125 ft high.

Orense

Province of northwest Spain in southwest Galicia autonomous community; area 7,278 sq km/2,810 sq mi; population (1995 est) 364,500. Its southern border is on the Portuguese frontier. The province is mountainous, with fertile valleys through which the River Miño and its tributary the Sil run; away from the valley bottoms, however, the soil is thin and poor. The provincial capital is Orense.
