Øresund

Strait leading from the Kattegat strait to the Baltic Sea, between Sweden on the east and the Danish island of Sjaelland on the west. Its length is 113 km/70 mi; its narrowest point, between Helsingor and Hälsingborg, is 5 km/3 mi; its widest point is 60 km/37 mi; and its deepest part is about 25 m/80 ft. In English it is called the Sound.

From the 15th century until 1857 heavy ‘Sound dues’ were levied on all foreign vessels passing through. The fortress of Kronborg at the entrance was taken by Horatio Nelson in 1801. The Øresund bridge, linking Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmö, Sweden, was opened to traffic on 1 July 2000. The 16 km/10 mi long link between the countries became the world's largest cable-stayed bridge.
