Negros Oriental

Province of eastern Negros Island in the Philippines; area 5,745 sq km/2,218 sq mi; population (1995) 1,025,000. The capital is Dumaguete. The terrain is rolling hills and plateaux. Mount Kanlaon (2,450 m/8,038 ft), an active volcano, is situated here. The main products are sugar cane and salt; industries include tiger prawn farming, silica quartz quarrying, and tourism.
