Oristano

Capital of Oristano province in west-central Sardinia, 90 km/56 mi northwest of Cagliari; population (1990 est) 32,600. Agricultural produce includes cereals, sugar beet (for which the town is a major distribution centre), fruit, and vegetables. Developing industries include food manufacturing, construction materials, papermaking, chemicals, and engineering. There is a highly developed service sector. The traditional crafts of pottery and lacework, and fishing-related activities are also important.

Oristano has a 13th-century cathedral (reconstructed in 1743) and a 13th-century tower, originally part of the town wall.
