Ormond Beach

Resort town in Volusia County, northeastern Florida, USA, on the Halifax River lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, 8 km/5 mi northwest of Daytona Beach; population (1990) 29,700. Founded in the early 1870s as a health resort, it remains a busy tourist centre, with beaches, sport fishing, and an annual antique car festival. ‘The Casements’, the millionaire John D Rockefeller's last home (1914–37), is a popular attraction.

Wealthy Northerners built winter estates here throughout the early part of the 20th century. In the early 1900s automobile races were held on the resort's hard sand beaches.
