Oromocto

Seat of Sunbury County, southern-central New Brunswick, Canada, at the junction of the Oromocto River with the St John River, 21 km/13 mi southeast of Fredericton; population (1991) 9,300. It is primarily a service centre for C F Gagetown, Canada's largest military training facility, which extends over an area of 110,000 ha/275,000 ac on the town's eastern border.

Formerly the site of Native Canadian Malecite and Acadian settlements, Oromocto was established in 1783 by Loyalists, colonists who maintained allegiance to Britain during the American Revolution. It remained a small agricultural and lumbering community until the expansion of the base in the 1950s.
