Orono

Town in Penobscot County, east-central Maine, USA, on the Penobscot River, 13 km/8 mi north of Bangor; population (1990) 10,600. It is the seat of the main campus of the University of Maine (1862). Industries include the manufacture of textiles, wood and paper products, canvas goods, oars and paddles, and concrete. Orono, which originally included Old Town, was named in honour of a Penobscot chief for his friendship to the local settlers.
