Orthoptera

Insect order comprising the grasshoppers, locusts, and crickets. The order contains some 10,000 species arranged in about 15 families.

The largest and most important family is Acrididae, the grasshoppers and locusts. The other Orthopteran families include: Gryllidae, the crickets; Gryllotalpidae, the mole crickets; and Tettigoniidae, the bush crickets (katydids).

Classification

Orthoptera is in subclass Pterygota, class Insecta, phylum Arthropoda.
