Ortiz, Alfonso Alex (1939– )

Educator and cultural anthropologist. The author of studies of Pueblo Indian societies, including The Tewa World (1969), he also compiled and edited an anthology of American Indian poetry.

Ortiz was born in San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico. He graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1961 and received a PhD from Chicago in 1967. He taught at Princeton before joining the University of New Mexico faculty in 1970.
