Orton, Joe (John Kingsley) (1933–1967)English dramatist. In his black comedies, surreal and violent action takes place in genteel and unlikely settings. Plays include Entertaining Mr Sloane (1964), Loot (1966), and What the Butler Saw (1968). His diaries deal frankly with his personal life. He was murdered by his lover Kenneth Halliwell.
