Oruro

City in Bolivia, 210 km/130 mi southeast of La Paz; population (1996) 257,888. It is capital of the department of the same name, which has an area of 53,000 sq km/20,463 sq mi. The city is at the centre of Bolivia's great tin-mining area. Though the city itself no longer has mines, silver, copper, and wolfram are worked in the region. Oruro stands at an altitude of 3,630 m/11,909 ft.

Buildings in Oruro include a former concert hall (now a cinema) in the baroque style, and the palace of culture. The disused San José mine, 3 km/2 mi west of the city, is open to visitors.

Every Easter, the city hosts an Indian carnival masquerade known as ‘La Diablada’, an exciting and colourful spectacle famous throughout the country. Oruro is an important railway centre, lying on the Antofagasta–La Paz line, and is the terminus of a branch line.
