Osage County

Largest county of northeastern Oklahoma, USA, bounded to the north by Kansas and to the southwest by the Arkansas River; area 5,866 sq km/2,265 sq mi; population (1990) 41,600. Its seat is Pawhuska. The county is coextensive with the Osage Indian Reservation, formed in the 1870s after most Osage lands had been taken by European settlers. Oil discovered beneath the reservation early in the 1920s has enabled the Osage and county to prosper. Livestock rearing and mixed farming contribute to the local economy.
