Osage Plains

Osage Plains

Extensive section of the central US prairies, between the Great Plains to the west and the Ozark Plateau and lower-lying prairie areas to the east. The Osage Plains cover the eastern third of Kansas (south of the Kansas River) and the centre of Oklahoma, and extend south into north-central Texas and northeast into western Missouri. The Osage, an indigenous people who lived in the Ohio Valley before migrating here, gave their name to the area.

The Osage Plains, which were beyond the southern boundary of the ice sheets that covered much of North America in the Pleistocene period, generally lie at an altitude of 300-600 m/1000-2000 ft, and are characterized by flat or rolling terrain. The Arkansas, Cimarron, Canadian, Washita, Red, and Brazos are among the rivers that drain the plains to the east or southeast. Major cities on or around the plains include Wichita, Oklahoma City, Tulsa (on the eastern edge), and Wichita Falls.
