Oshkosh

City and administrative headquarters of Winnebago County, eastern-central Wisconsin, on the western shore of Lake Winnebago,at the mouth of the Fox River, 120 km/75 mi northwest of Milwaukee; population (2000) 62,900. Industries include the manufacture of clothing (overalls and babywear), machinery, woodwork, candles, and electronics. A campus of the University of Wisconsin (1871) is in the city.

Oshkosh was settled in 1836. The city was named after a chief of the Menominee American Indian people.
