Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.06 sec.

Osiander, Andreas (1498–1552)

German Protestant cleric. While pastor in Nürnberg he published his Harmony of the Gospels (1537). In 1548 he was appointed lecturer at the new university of Königsberg where he wrote De justificatione (1550), in which he opposed Luther's doctrine of justification by faith. His religious opinions were unpopular, and he was attacked by Philip Melanchthon and other Lutherans.

Osiander's son Lukas (1534–1604) was a court preacher; Andreas (1562–1617), son of Lukas, was chancellor at Tübingen; Johann Adam (1626–1697) was preacher, professor, and chancellor at Tübingen; and his sons Osiander and John were a physician and philologist respectively.
