Oskaloosa

Seat of Mahaska County, southern-central Iowa, USA, 35 km/22 mi northwest of Ottumwa; population (2000) 10,900. Formerly the site of Iowa's first coal mine, it is now an agricultural trading, food processing, and livestock distribution centre. Industries include the manufacture of farm equipment, animal feed, and clothing. Lake Keomah State Park lies 6 km/4 mi to the east. Oskaloosa was settled by Quakers in 1843 on the site of a small fort, built in 1835.

Oskaloosa means ‘last of the beautiful’ after a American Indian princess. The first courthouse of 1846 was also used as a church and entertainment venue. It was abandoned in 1855 and a permanent courthouse, still in use, was built in 1886. The railway arrived in 1864, and William Penn College was established here in 1873.
