Öskemen

Industrial city and capital of East Kazakhstan oblast (region), Kazakhstan, situated at the confluence of the Irtysh (Ertis) and Ulba rivers 175 km/109 mi south east of Semey; population (1995) 320,000. Öskemen has uranium processing facilities and produces zinc, lead, and titanium. It also has factories manufacturing machines and foodstuffs, and a large hydroelectric power station is sited nearby.

The city was founded in 1720 as a Russian fort. The town grew considerably from the 1940s and 1950s onwards, as Russian and Ukrainian immigrants arrived to work in the mineral extraction industry.
