Östergötland

County of southern Sweden, containing several lakes, lying between Lake Vättern and the Baltic Sea; area 11,048 sq km/4,266 sq mi; population (1990) 395,600. It is a fertile agricultural area, interspersed with lakes, waterways, and forests. There are iron and copper mines. The chief town is Norrköping.
