Östersund

Chief town of Jämtland county, Sweden; population (2005 est) 43,800. Situated on Lake Storsjön, it is an important service and military centre.

The town has an annual chamber-music festival.

It is prohibited to capture, injure, or kill any species found in Lake Storsjön, which is believed by some to be the home of a ‘monster’.
