Ostman, Arnold (1939– )

Swedish conductor. After study in Paris and Stockholm he was director of the Vadstena Academy from 1969 to 1979, conducting operas by Provenzale, Leo, Monteverdi, Purcell, and Stradella. He was music director of the Court theatre at Drottningholm (1979–91), giving period-style performances of eight operas by Mozart, Kraus's Proserpin, and Iphigénie en Aulide. He made his London debut in 1983 with Il Matrimonio Segreto at the Sadler's Wells Theatre; he appeared in London the following year at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, with Don Giovanni. He conducted Rossini's Tancredi at the Wexford Festival (1986) and Mozart's Lucio Silla at the Vienna Staatsoper in 1990. He returned to Drottningholm in 1992 for Orfeo ed Euridice.
