European corn borer

Moth whose larvae are a serious menace in countries, such as the USA, where maize is an important crop.

It made its first appearance on the eastern coast of the USA in 1917, and since then has penetrated further west. It causes annual damage of approximately $1 billion. The US Environment Protection Agency approved the sale of maize genetically engineered to resist the European corn borer in 1995.
