otolith

Tiny calcareous deposit found in the ears of fishes, which are in contact with the sensory cushions supplied by the acoustic nerves. Their function is as an organ of balance.

Frequently otoliths are the only parts of a fish's anatomy to survive decay, and their variation affords a clue in many cases to the classification of the fish.
