Oujda

Industrial and commercial city in northern Morocco, near the border with Algeria; population (2004) 400,700. It trades in wool, grain, and fruit; there is lead, coal, and zinc mining. Tourism is important. The Moroccan and Algerian railway systems meet here.

Founded in 944 by the Berbers, it was destroyed and rebuilt so many times that it became known as the ‘city of fear’.
