Ould Daddah, Moktar (1924- )

Mauritanian lawyer, politician, and president (1960-78). He became vice-president of the Government Council on 20 May 1957 and on 28 November 1958, president of the Provisional Government. He was appointed prime minister on 28 June 1959 and, on 28 November 1960, the first president of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. He was re-elected for further five-year terms on 7 August 1966, 8 August 1971, and 8 August 1976.

Ould Daddah was born in Boutilimit, Mauritania. He was educated first at Blanchot, Mauritania, and then at Saint-Louis, Senegal, and finally at the University of Paris in France. He qualified as a lawyer, as well as being awarded a diploma in modern oriental languages. He entered the legal profession as a probationary lawyer in Dakar, Senegal.
