outlawryIn medieval England, a declaration that a criminal was outside the protection of the law, with his or her lands and goods forfeited to the crown, and all civil rights being set aside. It was a lucrative royal ‘privilege’; Magna Carta restricted its use, and under Edward III it was further modified. Some outlaws, such as Robin Hood, became popular heroes.
