Ovalle

Town in the Coquimbo region of central Chile, 96 km/60 mi south of the city of Coquimbo; population (1996) 75,000. Ovalle lies at the centre of a fruit-growing and mining district, watered by the Limari River, and wool is also produced. There are thermal springs in the vicinity.

Close to Ovalle is the Monumento Arquealógico Valle del Encanto, a rocky canyon of the River Limari, which features pre-Columbian petroglyphs, pictographs, and mortars.
