Ovamboland

Former region of north Namibia stretching along the Namibia–Angola frontier; area 56,000 sq km/21,622 sq mi. It is inhabited by the Ovambo people. The major administrative centre is Oshakati. The region was divided into four districts (Oshikoto, Oshana, Omusati, and Ohangwena) following regional restructuring 1992–93.

Ovamboland was the scene of conflict between SWAPO guerrillas and South African forces in the 1970s and 1980s.

Grass grows well over most of the flat, sandy land; there are few trees. There are no rivers except the Cunene on the northern border, but the rainfall (400–500 mm/16–20 in in the centre and east, decreasing westwards) allows cereals to be grown without irrigation. A road crosses Ovamboland, but the nearest railhead is outside the territory at Tsumeb.
