Oviedo

Capital of Asturias autonomous community, northwest Spain, 25 km/16 mi south of the Bay of Biscay; population (1991) 194,900. Industries include textiles, metal goods, pharmaceuticals, matches, chocolate, and sugar. The university here dates from 1608, and there is a Gothic cathedral, which is mainly 15th century.

Oviedo was sacked by the French in 1809, and was badly damaged in 1934 during a rising of Asturian miners against the government. The uprising was suppressed by General Franco, who came to national prominence as a result.

Oviedo

Town in Seminole County, eastern-central Florida, USA, south of Lake Jessup, 19 km/12 mi northeast of Orlando; population (1990) 11,100. Incorporated in 1925, it produced citrus fruits and fertilizer, and is now a growing residential community.
