Oviedo

Industries include textiles, metal goods, pharmaceuticals, matches, chocolate, and sugar. The university here dates from 1608, and there is a Gothic cathedral, which is mainly 15th century. |
| Oviedo was sacked by the French in 1809, and was badly damaged in 1934 during a rising of Asturian miners against the government. The uprising was suppressed by General Franco, who came to national prominence as a result. |
