Owens, John (1790-1846)

British cotton merchant. He was the founder of Owens College: he bequeathed £96,000 for the erection of a college, on the condition that no test of religious belief or profession should be imposed on staff or students. The college is now part of Manchester University. Owens was born in Manchester, England.
