Oxnard

City in Ventura County, southwest California, USA; population (2000) 170,400. It is located 85 km/53 mi west-northwest of Los Angeles, to the north of Port Hueneme, on the Santa Barbara Channel of the Pacific Ocean. Industries include aerospace equipment, paper products, agricultural chemicals, mobile homes, processed foods, oil refining, and tourism. The city is in one of the state's most fertile agricultural regions; lemons and vegetables are grown in the area. Oxnard was founded 1898 and developed around a sugar-beet factory.
