ozone depleter

Any chemical that destroys the ozone in the stratosphere. Most ozone depleters are chemically stable compounds containing chlorine or bromine, which remain unchanged for long enough to drift up to the upper atmosphere. The best known are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

Other ozone depleters include halons, used in some fire extinguishers; methyl chloroform and carbon tetrachloride, both solvents; some CFC substitutes; and the pesticide methyl bromide.

CFCs accounted for approximately 75% of ozone depletion in 1995, whereas methyl chloroform (atmospheric concentrations of which had markedly decreased during 1990–94) accounted for an estimated 12.5%. The ozone depletion rate overall is now decreasing as international agreements to curb the use of ozone-depleting chemicals begin to take effect. In 1996 there was a decrease in ozone depleters in the lower atmosphere. This trend is expected to continue into the stratosphere over the next few years.

In 1987 the developing countries and the Russian Federation were responsible for just 15% of chlorofluorocarbon emissions. In 1996 the percentage had risen to 80%, according to UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) estimates.
