Pâris, Alain (1947– )

French conductor and lexicographer. He studied at the École Normale in Paris and with Paul Paray. He made his debut in 1969 and has been guest conductor with leading French orchestras, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra de la Suisse Romance, and the Philharmonia Hungarica. From 1976 he was assistant with the Orchestre Capitole de Toulouse, and was appointed conductor in 1987. From 1987 he appeared with the Opéra du Rhin at Strasbourg. He was editor of Dictionnaiare des Interprètes (fourth edition 1995), and translator of the New Oxford Companion to Music and Baker's Biographical (1994).
